Overview
The Warehouse Operations Manager I is responsible for the efficient day-to-day operation of the warehouse, focusing on managing personnel and implementing action plans. This role oversees a facility ranging from 100,000 to 500,000 sq. ft., tracking equipment hours, ensuring maintenance schedules, and conducting employee meetings. Reports to the General Manager of the Distribution Center.
Responsibilities
Operations Management
- Develop strategic plans with the General Manager for efficient and cost-effective operations.
- Ensure shipping and receiving schedules meet goals.
- Manage warehouse supervisors and staff.
- Oversee inbound and outbound shipments for accuracy and timeliness.
- Audit compliance with SOPs.
- Optimize equipment utilization.
- Review daily objectives and determine productivity needs.
- Partner with leaders to balance labor and workload.
- Match personnel skills to job requirements.
- Analyze workload versus labor and equipment.
- Plan long-term labor needs based on data.
- Recommend programs to improve operations.
Financials
- Understand how decisions impact financial outcomes.
- Learn about budgeting, forecasting, and financial reports.
- Run productivity and labor reports to identify gaps.
Employee Relations/Development
- Conduct pre-shift meetings covering productivity and operational issues.
- Support staffing and hiring processes.
- Onboard new employees and follow training schedules.
- Set and communicate departmental and individual goals.
- Maintain HR practices and adhere to policies.
- Work with HR on employee issues and disciplinary actions.
- Provide coaching, feedback, and recognition.
- Participate in employee development and talent selection.
- Model company values and vision.
- Conduct performance reviews and recommend raises.
- Stay current on industry information and tools.
- Travel to other warehouses as needed.
Safety and Security
- Ensure safe, clean, and efficient warehouse operations.
- Participate in safety initiatives.
- Implement safety schedules complying with standards.
- Perform safety observations and coaching.
- Improve procedures to prevent accidents.
- Investigate incidents and implement improvements.
- Manage equipment maintenance with vendors.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in Supply Chain, Business, or related field preferred.
- 5+ years supervisory experience in warehousing/distribution.
- Experience with Warehouse Management Systems (preferably Manhattan).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of warehouse/mechanical equipment.
- Understanding of OSHA, DOT, HAZMAT, FDA regulations; willingness to get certified.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Adaptability to changing priorities and stressful situations.
- Experience with seasonal workforces is a plus.
- Interest in performance metrics, process improvement, Lean/Six Sigma.
- Strong talent management and team-building skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Customer service orientation.
- Analytical and mathematical skills.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
- Availability for irregular hours, including nights, weekends, holidays.
- Physical ability to stand/walk for 10-12 hours, lift up to 50 pounds, and perform physical tasks.
