Job summary

American Medical Association seeks a seasoned executive to lead the Science, Medicine & Public Health team in Chicago. This hybrid role requires strategic direction, program development, and collaboration with internal and external partners to advance science-based public health policy.

The VP will oversee budget, staff, and grant activities, represent AMA in scientific forums, and guide evidence-based initiatives across health systems, with travel as needed.

Qualifications

• MD or DO required.
• At least 15 years’ experience; at least 5 of which in academic environment; 5 in clinical/public health setting.
• Expertise in medical/public health field; research/publication record.
• Strong understanding of evidence-based medicine and policy development.
• Ability to build relationships across organizations and with stakeholders.
• Excellent negotiation and facilitation skills; adaptable and persuasive.
• Strong analytical and leadership capabilities.
• Willingness to travel.

Responsibilities

• Strategy and Program Development: lead the team's science and public health strategy.
• Provide evidence-based recommendations for AMA policy and initiatives.
• Monitor emerging areas of science/public health to inform responses.
• Collaborate with AMA units and external stakeholders on guidance/resources.
• Manage budget and resource allocation for SMPH.
• Staff leadership: mentor and supervise staff; set objectives and evaluate performance.
• Represent AMA in external scientific and public health discussions.
