Job summary

Akebia Therapeutics, Inc. in Cambridge/MA seeks an experienced Vice President, Intellectual Property to lead the IP function and drive portfolio strategy in collaboration with R&D and CMC teams.

You will advise the CIOO and board on patent matters, manage outside counsel, and support due diligence for in-licensing while shaping a proactive, cross-functional IP culture at Akebia. The role transitions to Waltham with office hybrid flexibility.

Qualifications

• J.D. and admission to the Patent Bar.
• PhD in Organic Chemistry or Biology with 10 years of law firm or in-house biopharma experience OR Bachelor’s with 15 years in similar settings.
• Small molecule and/or biologic patent experience.
• Strong litigation experience.
• Ability to build strong relationships across functions.
• Excellent interpersonal, decision-making, organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute the IP strategy; serve as the key advisor on IP matters impacting the business.
• Collaborate with R&D and CMC to prepare, file and prosecute patent applications.
• Advise the Chief Legal Officer, ELT and Board on IP matters.
• Develop IP strategies for Akebia’s product candidates.
• Work with collaboration partners on patent matters.
• Lead IP due diligence for business development opportunities.
