Job summary

AbbVie is seeking an in-house Senior Counsel for the Patent Prosecution group, supporting immunology products. The role is based in Waltham, MA, with hybrid work (on site 3+ days/week) and additional locations in North Chicago, IL, or South San Francisco, CA.

You will develop and implement IP strategies for AbbVie’s products and candidates. The position requires JD, USPTO registration, 5+ years of patent law experience, and a strong technical background in life sciences.

Qualifications

• JD degree from an accredited law school and USPTO registration.
• 5+ years of patent law experience (attorney or patent agent) with U.S. and foreign prosecution.
• Technical background relevant to pharmaceutical patent prosecution (molecular biology/biochemistry/chemistry/biomedical fields).
• Strong legal, analytical, communication, collaboration, and people skills.
• Ability to manage complex projects and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Maximize AbbVie's competitive IP position through strategies.
• Advise cross-functional R&D and business teams on IP matters.
• Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications globally, with outside counsel management.
• Challenge and defend patents in IP proceedings (IPR, opposition, etc.).
• Conduct prior art searches and due diligence for business development.
