Job summary

The Robert Joseph Group is conducting a confidential search for a Vice President, Controller for a large mission-based nonprofit in Washington, DC. This on-site, senior leadership role oversees accounting operations, financial reporting, and a sizeable accounting team across the organization and affiliated entities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and at least 10 years of professional accounting experience.
• Substantial nonprofit accounting experience, including US GAAP financial reporting, contribution accounting and nonprofit tax compliance.
• Experience leading an accounting team and managing complex operations; 5+ years of management preferred.
• Experience with multi-entity reporting, consolidations, external audits and internal controls.
• Ability to manage competing deadlines and communicate clearly with leadership and staff.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Dynamics, Adaptive Insights, Salesforce, Anybill, and Concur; donor tools preferred.
• Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
• Ability to work fully on site in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities

• Lead accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts receivable/payable, and timely financial close across multiple entities.
• Oversee combined and consolidated financial statements and provide reliable information for budget, forecast and planning reviews.
• Lead and develop a large accounting team, set priorities, and strengthen coordination across functions.
• Manage the financial statement audit and coordinate with external auditors; ensure compliance with US GAAP and new standards.
• Evaluate shared services, cost allocations and intercompany arrangements affecting reporting and tax returns.
• Partner with fundraising and accounting on contribution accounting, pledges, donor restrictions, endowments, and distributions.
• Oversee nonprofit tax and regulatory reporting (Form 990, registrations, filings).
• Strengthen internal controls, policies, and staff training; improve reporting tools and processes.
