Job summary

Volunteer Specialist

Washington, DC | Hybrid | $24.03 - $26.44

Community of Hope seeks a 30-hour-per-week full-time Volunteer Specialist to ensure sufficient volunteers for program and organization activities, support volunteers and program teams, and help end homelessness. This position is located at The Conway Health and Resource Center in Southwest, DC.

What You’ll Do
  • Recruit and screen volunteers across all programs, update online recruitment platforms, and attend recruiting fairs.
  • Schedule sufficient volunteers for volunteer opportunities (e.g., Fam-Club, Birthday & Winter Parties) at short-term family housing sites.
  • Ensure volunteers have proper supervision and support for their duties at Fam-Club, birthday parties, and other activities.
  • Work with the Youth Engagement Specialist (YES) to plan and implement engaging and age-appropriate activities for Fam-Club.
  • Develop relationships with Fam-Club participants, including adults, children, and youth, to create a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Support the team’s storytelling for “Stories of Hope” and other communications by collecting photo releases and taking photos of residents, and connect the Communications team with families who want to share their story.
  • Ensure volunteers complete Volunteer Guidelines and Policies prior to volunteering, including securing parent/guardian signatures for minor volunteers.
  • Maintain communication with volunteers via phone, email, and/or mail to develop and maintain ongoing, long-term participation and strengthen involvement, including conversions to donors.
Requirements
Must‑Haves
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 2 years of volunteer management experience preferred.
  • Highly motivated, organized, and comfortable speaking in front of large groups; strong written and verbal communication for a variety of audiences.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, including internet and Microsoft Office, required.
  • Commitment to volunteerism and providing meaningful volunteer experiences required.
  • Able to work independently and with a team.
  • Commitment to supporting families experiencing homelessness and historically under‑resourced communities.
  • Awareness of and commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  • Ability to travel between sites as needed.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and certain weekends.
Nice‑to‑Haves
  • B.A./B.S. preferred.
  • Experience in a nonprofit, health care, or social service environment a plus.
  • Experience with youth development programming and management preferred.
  • Familiarity with best practices in volunteer management, child development, youth development programming and management, positive communication and behavior management, trauma‑informed care.
  • Knowledge of Raiser's Edge and/or VolunteerHub preferred.
