Volunteer Specialist

Do you have a passion for working with families and individuals in need of healthcare, housing, and community support services? Community of Hope is seeking a 30‑hour‑per‑week full‑time Volunteer Specialist. In this role, you’ll ensure there are enough volunteers for program or organization activities, as well as support volunteers and program teams. Join a mission‑driven team dedicated to ending homelessness and making a difference every day! This position is located at The Conway Health and Resource Center in Southwest, DC.

What You’ll Do

• Recruit and screen volunteers across all programs, including updating online recruitment platforms and attending recruiting fairs.
• Schedule a sufficient number of volunteers for volunteer opportunities (e.g., Fam‑Club, Birthday & Winter Parties) at COH’s short‑term family housing sites.
• Ensure that volunteers have proper supervision and support for their duties at Fam‑Club as well as birthday and other parties/activities.
• Work with the Youth Engagement Specialist (YES) to plan and implement engaging and age‑appropriate activities for Fam‑Club.
• Develop relationships with Fam‑Club participants, including adults, children, and youth, to create a safe and welcoming environment.
• Support the team’s storytelling for “Stories of Hope” and other communications by collecting photo releases and taking photos of residents. Connect the Communications team with families who are interested in sharing their story.
• Ensure that volunteers complete Volunteer Guidelines and Policies prior to volunteering, including securing parent/guardian signatures for minor volunteers.
• Maintain communication with volunteers via phone, email, and/or mail to develop and maintain ongoing, long‑term participation and strengthen involvement (e.g., for continued volunteer involvement as well as to convert to becoming donors).

Requirements

Must‑Haves

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum 2 years of volunteer management experience preferred.
• Highly motivated and organized with strong communication skills; must be comfortable speaking in front of large groups; must be able to communicate clearly (written and verbally) and effectively for a variety of audiences.
• Knowledge of computer systems, including internet and Microsoft Office required.
• Commitment to volunteerism and providing meaningful volunteer experiences required.
• Able to work, both independently and with a team.
• Commitment to supporting families experiencing homelessness and historically under‑resourced communities.
• Awareness of and commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
• Ability to travel between sites as needed.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and some weekends.

Nice‑to‑Haves

• B.A./B.S. preferred.
• Experience working in a nonprofit, health care, or social service environment a plus.
• Experience with youth development programming and management preferred.
• Familiarity with best practices in volunteer management, child development, youth development programming and management, positive communication skills & behavior management, trauma‑informed care.
• Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge and/or VolunteerHub preferred.
