Volunteer Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician

This application is for candidates who are at least 18 years of age. Candidates ages 16-17 years must apply to the 'Junior Volunteer Firefighter/ Emergency Medical Technician' opening.

General Definition of Work

The Volunteer Firefighter is a non-compensated position that performs difficult service work providing fire suppression, emergency medical services, and other emergency responses. Work is performed under emergency conditions and usually involves personal danger. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Essential Functions

• Responding to emergency calls; suppressing fires; rendering medical aid; preparing and maintaining detailed records.
• Participates in drills and classes on fire suppression, disaster control, and related fields; maintains skills through ongoing training.
• Participates in community awareness and public education programs; maintains apparatus and equipment; assists in inspection and maintenance of equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• No experience necessary; training provided. Gains knowledge of fire suppression, hazardous material incidents, and emergencies.
• Understanding of local street system and geography.
• Ability to follow instructions, establish cooperative relationships, keep records, and adhere to safety standards.
• Ability to learn technical information, operate tools and apparatus, perform maintenance, and perform community activities.

Special Requirements

Members must wear and maintain PPE such as steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, SCBA, N95 respirator, etc., in designated risk areas.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

This is heavy work requiring exertion, climbing, balancing, and other physical activities. Environmental conditions include extreme cold and heat, and exposure to bloodborne pathogens with required PPE.

Minimum Position Requirements

• Be at least 18 years old.
• Complete application process: background check, driving record check, online training, CPR certification.
• Complete a 12-hour shift weekly.
• Enroll in certification classes: EVOC, Fire Academy, EMT.
• Maintain PPE issued by AVFRD.
• Complete annual physical paid for by Loudoun County Fire Rescue.
