Junior Volunteer Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician

The Junior position is open to 16-17 year olds who are willing to commit to a long-term (multi-year) position with AVFRD, obtaining professional Firefighter and EMT certifications and responding to 911 calls on a weekly basis. Candidates 18 years and over must apply through the 'Volunteer Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)' job posting.

General Definition of Work

The Volunteer Firefighter is a non-compensated position that performs fire suppression, emergency medical services, and other emergency responses under emergency conditions, often involving personal danger, under regular supervision.

Essential Functions
  • Responding to emergency calls; suppressing fires; rendering medical aid; preparing and maintaining detailed records.
  • Participate in drills and classes on fire suppression, disaster control, and related fields; maintain skill levels through ongoing training.
  • Participate in community awareness and public education programs; maintain apparatus and equipment; assist in inspection and maintenance of equipment and apparatus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • No experience necessary; training provided. Gain knowledge in fire suppression, hazardous material incident mitigation, and emergency response.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish cooperative relationships; keep records and prepare reports.
  • Comply with the Department’s Volunteer Minimum Training Standard Policy; perform work safely; operate tools and equipment; perform maintenance and minor repairs; perform community service activities; maintain records and reports, including computer data entry.
Special Requirements

Members must wear and maintain PPE such as steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, SCBA, N95 respirator, or other safety gear in risk areas.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

This work involves exertion, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Communication and visual acuity are essential. Work is performed inside and outside, in extreme temperatures, and may involve exposure to bloodborne pathogens with proper PPE.

Minimum Position Requirements
  • Be 16-17 years old
  • Complete application process including background checks, online training, CPR certification
  • Complete a 12-hour weekly shift (6pm-6am)
  • Enroll in certification classes: EVOC, Volunteer Fire Academy, EMT
  • Maintain issued PPE
  • Complete annual physical paid by Loudoun County Fire Rescue
