Job summary

Food Bank of Alaska is seeking a Volunteer Coordinator to lead volunteer activities, train and supervise volunteers, and support special events. This full‑time, non‑exempt role reports to the Volunteer Manager and starts at $20–$22 per hour depending on experience.

The coordinator will manage volunteer scheduling, recognition, and engagement, collaborating with Operations and Programs teams to ensure safe, efficient distribution and a culture of philanthropy.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years of customer service experience.
  • Volunteer experience with responsibility for supervising volunteers preferred.
  • Able to work in a warehouse environment and perform hands‑on tasks that may involve dirt or produce.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily hands‑on training and supervision to volunteers. Coordinate with warehouse and logistics priorities and set up/break down volunteer workspace.
  • Orient volunteers to the organization and invite involvement as donors or advocates. Acknowledge volunteers with timely thank‑yous and recognition activities.
  • Maintain volunteer database, track hours, and update procedures including confidentiality agreements.
  • Provide excellent customer service to volunteers at all times.

Volunteer Coordinator

This is a full-time, non-exempt position reporting to the Volunteer Manager. The role starts at $20-$22 per hour, depending on experience.

The Volunteer Coordinator supports the Manager of Volunteer Resources in operating volunteer activities at Food Bank of Alaska. This role includes setting up volunteer events, training and supervising volunteers, supporting volunteer engagement at special events, and managing volunteer scheduling, tracking, and appreciation. The position works closely with the Operations and Programs teams.

  • Provide daily hands‑on training and supervision to volunteers. Coordinate with the Warehouse Manager and Logistics Manager regarding volunteer tasks and priorities, as well as setting up and breaking down of volunteer workspace. Provide volunteer supervision and coordination at special events, such as Blessing, as requested. Plan volunteer opportunitiespractically, to engage the community.
  • Ensure coordination with Food Programs on questions that affect food safety and distribution. Orient volunteers to Food Bank of Alaska and its mission and invite volunteers to be further involved as donors or advocates. Generate timely thank-you's to volunteers and organize appropriate volunteer recognition activities.
  • Maintain an ongoing schedule of volunteers. Operate the volunteer database and update volunteer information. Track volunteer hours, including individual volunteer hours as well as aggregate hours. Update and maintain appropriate written volunteer procedures, including a confidentiality agreement.
  • Provide excellent customer service at all times to volunteers.

OTHER JOB DUTIES

  • Participating in organizational and fundraising activities as needed as part of the Development team
  • Collaborate with all Food Bank of Alaska staff to support a culture of philanthropy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of two years of customer service experience. Volunteer experience with responsibility for supervising volunteers preferred.
  • Willingness to work in a warehouse environment and participate in hands‑on tasks that may involve dirt or produce, such as bagging potatoes.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule includes evening hours (average two per week) and at least one weekend per month.
  • High energy, strong initiative, and readiness to step in wherever needed.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to break down and explain complex tasks.
  • Comfort representing the organization with individuals and groups.
  • Familiarity with basic office software, including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Initiative and independence in carrying out responsibilities.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Reliable transportation and a clean driving record.
  • Strong self-motivation and the ability to work as a team member.
