Job summary

The Minnesota Daily, the independent student-run news organization at the University of Minnesota, seeks a part-time Visual Designer to create reader-friendly layouts for print pages, cover pages, and special issues. You will design infographics, collaborate with reporters and editors, and ensure strong visual storytelling while adhering to newsroom standards.

Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Illustrator, and experience with page-design software, is required; familiarity with journalism ethics

Qualifications

• Must be a University of Minnesota Student.
• Knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator.
• Familiarity with the news-gathering process, journalism ethics, and the functions of all usual page elements, such as headlines, subheads, photos, cutlines, infographics and text.
• Extensive design experience.
• Familiarity with online programs that design visuals for online-exclusive stories.
• Demonstrated knowledge of standard newspaper design practices.
• Experience with the Daily’s page-design software or a similar professional-caliber program.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the day-to-day design and creation of MN Daily pages, interesting and creative infographics, the design of some cover pages, and special issues.
• Focuses on ensuring the newspaper is reader-friendly and quickly accessible for readers.
• Works with reporters, section editors, and other Daily employees to determine graphic and design needs.
• Remain on call in case problems arise with production staff.
• Other duties as assigned by the Managing Production Editor
