The Visitor Services Associate provides welcoming, knowledgeable, and engaging customer service to visitor to James Madison's Montpelier. Responsibilities include all front line operations at the Montpelier Gate House, Visitor Center, and Museum Shop. The position promotes museum offerings and memberships, responds to visitor questions and concerns, and supports a positive and safe visitor experience. Associates work collaboratively with team members, follow established cash-handling, safety, and security procedures, and may assist with special programming, weekends, and holidays.
Welcome visitors of all ages and backgrounds and help them feel comfortable and informed during their visit.
Provide directions and assist visitors with navigating the site.
Assist with ticket, membership, and museum merchandise sales.
Maintain a strong working knowledge of site logistics, membership opportunities, programs, and visitor experiences.
Assist supervisors with daily opening, closing, and security procedures.
Support emergency procedures when necessary to help ensure the safety of visitors, coworkers, collections, and facilities.
Clean visitor areas and restock store merchandise as needed.
Work collaboratively with colleagues and assist with additional projects and activities as needed.
An outgoing, friendly, and positive approach to customer service.
Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to work as part of a team or independently.
Basic cash handling skills to include math skills of addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.
Basic computer skills
Availability to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and special events as operational needs require.
Acceptable background check.
Prior experience in customer services, retail, or museum gift shops.
Experience with Square and Simpletix POS.
Ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time.
Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
