Job summary

BJC HealthCare is seeking a Patient Safety Companion to provide continuous observation of assigned patients via video monitoring and to verbally redirect patients when necessary, summoning the clinical team for assistance as required.

The role emphasizes maintaining patient privacy and dignity, collaborating with the clinical team, and timely, accurate documentation. It is safety-sensitive and requires constant alertness and on-site presence.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• No prior experience required.
• Associate's degree preferred.
• Experience<2 years preferred.

Responsibilities

• Maintains continuous visual observation of assigned patient(s) on a monitor at all times.
• Verbally redirects patients from at-risk behaviors and summons the clinical team as needed.
• Participates in hand-offs and communicates with the clinical team to ensure constant patient observation.
• Provides explanations to patients while maintaining privacy and dignity.
• Documents patient activity, interactions, and communications in designated records in a timely, accurate manner.

Overview

Role Purpose

Provides continuous observation by video surveillance of assigned patients (including high-risk patients). Verbally redirects patients from engaging in at risk behaviors and summons the Clinical Team if the patients requires assistance, or if in any imminent danger to self or others. Serves as a Patient Safety Companion remotely observing and assisting with keeping patients safe.

Responsibilities

• Maintains continuous visual observation of assigned patient(s) at all times on a monitor. Verbally redirects the patient over a digital 2-way audio device, ensures the activation of automated audio alerts in patient care area, and immediately summons the clinical team if the patient requires assistance.
• Participates in the collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues and assures patient environment safety. Immediately follows the departmental protocol/guidelines and seeks assistance from the clinical team when patient appears to pose a threat to self and others.
• Participates in hand-off of pertinent assigned patient information/behavior at the beginning and upon completion of a shift. Consistently communicates with clinical team and waits for replacement, prior to vacating the monitoring station for any reason to ensure constant patient observation.
• Provides patient with explanations as necessary, but does not counsel or provide opinions. Communicates effectively with patients and staff while maintaining discretion, courtesy and an understanding of patient privacy. (Protects the dignity of the observed patients).
• Responsible for timely accurate documentation of patient activity, interactions, and communication to the clinical team according to policy, protocol and/or standard of work in designated records.
• BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
