Job summary

The Virginia House Democratic Caucus (VHDC) seeks a Policy and Legislative Director to help develop policy positions, track legislation, and support caucus operations from its Richmond, VA office. The role collaborates with stakeholders to advance an affordable, resilient, and secure Virginia and reports to the Executive Director.

Qualifications

• Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize objectives, juggle multiple projects, and maintain consistent attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to take both initiative and direction while managing multiple projects with competing deadlines.
• Exercise discretion, confidentiality, and political judgment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Comfort working strategically and effectively with elected officials, including Caucus members, legislative staff, and a wide range of stakeholders.
• Commitment to the values and ideals of the Democratic Party.
• Willingness and ability to work extensive hours, including nights and weekends as needed.
• Proficiency in Google Suite, including Docs and Sheets.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and report Caucus policy priorities and bills to leadership and stakeholders.
• Research emerging policy trends and relevant studies or recommendations by state boards and commissions.
• Develop policy materials to support Caucus members, including talking points, bill summaries, and status updates.
• Collaborate with Communications Director to integrate policy priorities into messaging.
• Support caucus campaigns with legislative updates and related projects.
• Liaise with elected officials, government staff, lobbyists, advocates, and candidates.
• Assist with caucus operations and vendor management, including HR workflows and procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Caucus Leadership and Executive Director.
