Job summary

ATI Specialty Materials in Monroe, NC is seeking a VIM Process Engineering Intern for a 10-week Summer 2027 program. You’ll work with Operations and Engineering on nickel melting technologies, process optimization, and furnace operations.

Qualifications

Pursuing BS or graduate degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Industrial/Manufacturing Engineering.
GPA of 3.0+ preferred.
Interest in thermo-mechanical processing of metals.
Familiarity with Excel, Python, or Minitab/JMP for data analysis.
Ability to work in plant and shop-floor environments.

Responsibilities

Partner with Operations to create visual standards for quality metrics on the VIM shop floor.
Update the VIM Can-Up MIS to optimize the sequence of elemental additions using thermodynamic and chemical modeling.
Conduct refractory trials for new suppliers and document VIM furnace liner health.
Analyze process information to identify opportunities to improve melt quality and consistency.
Support development and documentation of standard operating procedures for VIM processes.
Collaborate with Operations and Engineering to investigate conditions and develop practical solutions.
