Job description

This is the first US-based hire into the Expedition Operations Group and a unique opportunity to help build out our operating capability in North America. As our US portfolio grows, the successful candidate will play a central role in shaping how EOG supports our North American companies, establishing the local network, relationships and ways of working the team will scale on, in close partnership with the London-based EOG team.

The role will be based in our Boston office and will require travel to portfolio companies and prospective investments across North America, as well as periodic time with the EOG team in London. The role has two main responsibilities:

  • Chief of Staff for one (up to maximum two) portfolio company: This entails “hands on” change management and driving initiatives in a specific portfolio company. The role will be expected to work hand in hand with the founders as an extension of their management team to deliver ambitious growth plans. We expect this to represent about 50% of the role (though we see a four day a week upon starting with a company, ramping down after a few months to ~2.5-3 days)
  • Supporting change management and growth initiatives within the rest of Expedition’s portfolio companies. In effect, part of the Expedition Operating Group (EOG), the role will ensure the other companies are supported whilst helping to build repeatable capabilities in the US (incl. building a valuable network of leading functional expert advisors for growth-stage software companies, co-authoring playbooks and growth resources, fostering best practice sharing and networking across our portfolio company leaders, and conducting quarterly portfolio reviews with the investment team);

This person will report to the EOG lead, and will receive mentorship and guidance from the existing EOG team members as well as former Chief of Staffs and CEOs in Expedition’s network.

This role has two potential career tracks, whereby the successful candidate could progress as a Value Creation Professional in the EOG team, or as a leader in one of our portfolio companies.

Skills and background
  • A background in management consulting and / or software companies
  • Experience in Chief of Staff type roles
  • Some experience of working with Private Equity whether working alongside investors in a PE backed business or as in an operating group in a PE firm.
  • Though a generalist role, exposure to growth levers such as commercial excellence, new market entry, demand generation, marketing effectiveness would be a plus, as would experience of M&A or P&L ownership.
  • Extremely high levels of EQ and inter-personal skills as well as a ‘low-ego’ approach to work are vital for success, as well as a passion for creating value in a PE context.
  • Critical ability to work hand in hand with senior leaders, in supporting, challenging and effectively becoming an accelerating force for Expedition fast growing businesses.
  • The gravitas and maturity to communicate clearly and effectively with C-level stakeholders, including succinct executive presentations.
  • Strong ability to coordinate complex projects, including ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Intellectual curiosity, integrity, and humility are core pillars of our culture. We are seeking candidates who align with these principles.
  • Proactivity, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to self-organize and work autonomously, including as the first member of the team on the ground in the US.
  • Analytical skills, attention to detail, and an aptitude for problem solving.
  • Experience working across both US and European markets or teams would be a plus.
