Los Angeles, California | Reports to the Chief Operating Officer
We are partnering with a privately held US real estate investment and asset management company, with approximately $6 billion in assets under management, to appoint a Vice President of Risk Management.
The portfolio is diversified across multifamily, affordable housing, industrial and commercial, senior living and marinas, with significant California exposure. The business is entering its next stage of growth, including a significant change to its capital structure and a more active approach to acquisitions.
There is a strong, long-tenured Risk Manager in place who handles claims administration and day-to-day carrier follow-up. This role adds the senior, market-facing leadership above that. You will own the full economics of risk across the platform: insurance purchasing, retained risk, captive strategy, claims, loss control and emerging risk.
One of the first strategic questions is how the captive should evolve as the portfolios grow. That includes whether risks across different ownership groups should be separated, and where new programs such as renters insurance and security-deposit alternatives make sense. You will have the authority to recommend and lead changes to the captive, insurance structure and broker/carrier strategy, subject to Board and ownership approval.
This is a strategic role, not only a renewals role. You will bring risk into acquisitions, dispositions and major capital decisions early enough to influence them, including as the business looks at markets beyond California. You will also own business continuity and crisis planning, and there is the opportunity, over time, to join the Investment Committee.
Affordable housing/HUD Section 8, senior living, marina/marine liability or ancillary insurance-program experience would be useful. ARM, CPCU or RIMS-CRMP is helpful but not essential.
