BCAN is seeking a seasoned fundraising leader to advance our culture of philanthropy as the Vice President of Development. As a key member of the executive leadership team, the VP of Development will be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing a comprehensive revenue development program, including peer-to-peer fundraising, special events, individual and major gifts, as well as corporate and foundation support. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in fundraising and team leadership, preferably within the nonprofit sector, and be driven by a passion for making a lasting impact at a growing organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with the CEO, Board, and staff to develop and execute dynamic annual and long-term fundraising strategies that align with the organization’s mission and strategic priorities.
- Design and oversee innovative fundraising strategies across individual and major gifts, campaigns, corporate and foundations, and donor-engagement.
- Monitor philanthropic trends and shifts in the external environment, providing insight-driven recommendations to strengthen fundraising outcomes.
- Uphold organizational integrity, collaboration, and stewardship in all fundraising and relationship-building activities.
Individual & Major Giving
- Create a compelling fundraising approach by leveraging BCAN’s programmatic and research assets; developing a high-impact narrative and pitch that communicates the value of program offerings.
- Oversee the launch and strategic management of a new major gifts program, implementing MOVES management across all constituent managers and maintaining both a personal and organizational portfolio.
- Oversee donor-advised fund (DAF) contributions, cultivating DAF holders and coordinating with fund advisors to maximize giving potential.
- Cultivate and strengthen relationships with high-net-worth individuals through tailored stewardship strategies that foster long-term engagement and revenue growth.
- Drive innovation in major giving, using data insights to evaluate performance and adjust strategies for optimal results.
Talent & Team Development
- Lead and support a high-performing team of 2-4 staff members and ensure readiness to expand at least 2 key roles including an MGO.
- Mentor, develop, and supervise two staff members through ongoing feedback, clear goals, and growth opportunities.
Corporate & Partnership Development
- Lead a strategic corporate engagement program to drive revenue, brand visibility, and community alignment through sponsorship, grants, employee giving initiatives, and pharma industry support.
- Cultivate and steward relationships with corporate partners, ensuring shared value, long-term collaboration and alignment with organizational goals.
- Identify new corporate funding opportunities and co-branded initiatives that enhance mission delivery while deepening market presence.
Donor Operations, Data Management & Reporting
- Oversee donor operations, including gift processing, data analysis, and reporting. Ensure the effective use of donor management systems to track engagement, analyze trends, and support solicitation efforts.
- Track and evaluate fundraising progress, providing regular performance reports against goals and budget. Develop strategies to address variances and optimize results.
- Ensure the sound fiscal operation of the Development function, including the timely and accurate development of income and expense budgets.
- Maintain strong relationships with fund advisors and financial institutions to maximize philanthropic impact and ensure compliance with best practices in DAF giving.
- Lead major events, including annual nationwide walks; oversee event logistics, communications, and materials; coordinate fundraising activities and support for event sponsorships and program grants.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related field; CFRE certification a plus.
- 12+ years of nonprofit fundraising experience, including peer-to-peer, corporate, individual, major gifts, foundations, and events including 8 years of management experience.
- Demonstrated success in leading fundraising efforts and exceeding revenue goals within a nonprofit environment.
- Proven ability to build, mentor, and motivate teams to achieve goals.
- Strong interpersonal and solicitation skills, engaging effectively with donors, Board members, and executives.
- Exceptional oral and written communication, demonstrating diplomacy and authority.
- Expertise in planning, decision-making, and financial oversight, with a focus on motivating teams and aligning organizational values.
- Proficient in fundraising techniques including developing a narrative and pitch for program offerings, creating persuasive power point presentations, and leveraging data to identify and engage high-potential prospects.
- Experienced with CRMS such as Raiser’s Edge and Luminate.
- Self-driven and resourceful, excelling in dynamic environments by developing creative fundraising strategies and fostering cross-functional collaboration.
- Online fundraising and direct response experience is a plus.
