Job summary

Emory & Henry University is seeking a Controller in Emory, VA to lead accounting, treasury, financial reporting, and business systems. You will ensure GAAP-compliant reporting, strengthen internal controls, and partner with campus leadership to advance institutional goals.

The role requires 7+ years in accounting/financial reporting, a bachelor’s in a relevant field, and strong communication with auditors and stakeholders. Higher-ed experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s/CPA preferred.
• 7+ years of progressively responsible accounting and financial reporting experience; higher education or nonprofit experience preferred.
• Extensive knowledge of GAAP; fund accounting knowledge preferred.
• Strong working knowledge of accounting systems and internal controls.
• Excellent communication and ability to work with auditors and leadership.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily accounting & financial administration including AR, AP, GL, treasury, endowment accounting, and financial systems.
• Maintain general ledger chart of accounts per GAAP and HE industry practices.
• Oversee grants accounting and compliance for restricted funds.
• Assist with debt compliance, covenant reporting, and external stakeholder information.
• Lead training on financial tools and processes and collaborate with campus departments.
• Prepare annual budgets, multi-year forecasts, and financial scenario analysis.
• Develop and maintain financial reports, dashboards, and BI tools for leadership and trustees.
• Oversee treasury functions including cash planning and investment reconciliations.
• Coordinate annual external audits and liaise with auditors to strengthen internal controls.
