Job summary

Banner University Medical Group in Tucson, AZ is seeking an experienced academic pathologist to serve as Vice Chair of Clinical Operations, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Medical Director of Laboratories at Banner - University Medical Center Tucson.

This 1.0 FTE leadership role combines strategic oversight with active clinical practice, reporting to the Department Chair and liaising with hospital leadership.

Qualifications

• MD, DO, or equivalent clinical doctoral degree.
• Board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology.
• Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Arizona.
• Previous leadership experience in clinical laboratory operations (e.g., Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, Section Chief).
• Demonstrated experience in laboratory oversight, clinical care, quality, regulatory compliance, and multidisciplinary leadership.

Responsibilities

• Provide medical and strategic leadership for Anatomic and Clinical Pathology laboratory operations.
• Serve as Laboratory Medical Director and ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, CMS, and regulatory standards.
• Oversee quality assurance, proficiency testing, test validation, utilization, and performance improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate with hospital and system leadership on laboratory strategy, service expansion, technology, and operational priorities.
• Serve as a physician liaison between laboratory services, medical staff, and hospital/system leadership.
• Support recruitment, onboarding, mentorship, and development of pathology faculty and staff.
• Maintain an active clinical practice in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology and participate in call.
• Participate in education, mentorship, and scholarly activities within the department.
