Job summary

The Boston MSPCA-Angell is seeking a Veterinary Technician or Assistant for the ER Appointment Technician role in Boston, MA. The position is full-time with a 40-hour workweek (4x10-hour shifts), supporting emergency doctors and handling outpatients and admitted patients.

Compensation includes $22-$27/hour for assistants, with CVTs earning $25-$30/hour plus a $5,000 sign-on bonus for CVTs. Applicants should have at least 2 years in emergency veterinary care.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years veterinary technician/assistant experience in emergency/critical care.
  • CVT or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

Description

This is a full time 40 hour/week position (4x10hr shifts)

THE POSITION:

The Veterinary Technician or Assistant – ER Appointment Technician will be responsible for supporting the needs of Emergency Doctors seeing emergencies through the emergency list. Their time will be spent working with outpatients and patients before they are admitted to the hospital. Once a patient is admitted, the care of that patient will transfer to the Inpatient service. Tasks that the ER Appointment Technician may be asked to perform include triage, gathering and documenting patient histories and exam findings, restraint, venipuncture/phlebotomy, SQ/IM/IV injections, catheter placement, sedation of patients, performing radiographs, filling prescriptions, submission of requests using the electronic medical record, invoicing, etc.

Some Responsibilities include:
  • Restraint of animals for examination
  • Basic diagnostic testing (PCV/TP, NOVA, SNAP tests, submission of slides for cytology, etc.)
  • Giving injections (SQ/IM/IV)
  • Filling prescriptions
  • Taking radiographs
  • Comfort with sedation is preferred/ideal
Physical Requirements:
  • Mandatory regular attendance and punctual presence.
  • Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time 67%-100% of scheduled shift.
  • Must be able to constantly move about within the wards and departments 67% - 100% of scheduled shift.
  • Must be able to frequently positon self in a manner to attend to patients at varying heights, including floor and exam table levels (3 – 4 feet in height) as well as elevated heights greater than 5 feet.
  • Must be able to constantly move patients weighing up to 50 pounds within the wards, departments and grounds; over 50lbs with assistance.

COMPENSATION:

Veterinary Assistants starting $22-$27/hour
Certified Veterinary Technicians starting $25-$30/hr, $5000 Sign on Bonus for CVTs!
Please note that candidates with additional experience or credentials may be eligible for compensation aligned with their qualifications

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS:

We are looking for applicants with at least 2 years of veterinary technician/assistant experience in an emergency and critical care environment. Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or equivalent experience. As this position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, we require applicants to include a cover letter showcasing your writing skills.
