Veterinary Technician Manager / Import Specialist (Senior Veterinary Technician)

Job Summary

The Senior Veterinary Technician is responsible for ensuring the humane care and treatment of laboratory animals across multiple research facilities. This role involves overseeing animal health and well-being, managing health surveillance, providing routine veterinary care (preoperative, operative, and postoperative), and managing inventory for drugs, surgical, and medical supplies to ensure timely availability.

The Technician oversees veterinary care across several facilities, including coordinating animal importation from non-approved vendors into quarantine, conducting health surveillance testing, and working closely with the Director of Veterinary Services to ensure animals are cleared from quarantine for research use.

As a key leader, the Technician is responsible for hiring, training, supporting veterinary technicians, addressing human resource issues, assessing staffing needs, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and policies. They act as a primary resource for researchers and their staff on animal health and care, helping maintain AAALAC accreditation.

Essential Functions
  • Fiscal Responsibility: Maintain and order medical supplies, assist researchers with ordering, manage chargebacks, coordinate payroll and HR requests, evaluate staff performance.
  • Employee Interaction/Supervision: Interact with departmental staff, supervise veterinary technicians, coordinate animal housing and movement.
  • Policy and Procedure Interpretation: Establish and update SOPs, assist with IACUC policies, prepare accreditation documentation, ensure legal compliance.
  • Internal and External Client Interaction: Communicate with investigators, suppliers, and regulatory bodies, participate in inspections.
  • Training and Professional Development: Ensure staff training, attend industry meetings, stay current on laboratory animal care.
  • Information and Inventory Management: Maintain facility data, manage timesheets, oversee supplies and animal movement.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in veterinary science or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 3 years of laboratory animal veterinary care experience.
  • At least 5 years of full-time veterinary technician experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Veterinary technician certification.
  • Dedication to humane animal care, knowledge of animal behavior, restraint and injection techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, strong communication and administrative skills, knowledge of regulatory issues.
Physical Demands
  • Standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, lifting up to 50 lbs.

Additional Information

This position is exempt, grade K, with a salary range of $54,630 to $81,940 annually. Salary may vary based on qualifications, experience, and internal review.
