Job Description

The Veterinary Technician II carries out daily activities within the Vivarium, providing clinical care and preventative medical procedures for research animals under their responsibility. Works autonomously on weekends and holidays. Contributes to projects or initiatives for the Comparative Medicine department, ensuring exemplary animal care and compliance with all regulatory standards, including local, federal, GLP, FDA, and USDA regulations. Supports the drug discovery and development process at AbbVie.

Responsibilities
  1. Conduct veterinary care with proficiency, providing basic care for all species housed in the facility.
  2. Provide or lead anesthesia support for surgical and imaging procedures such as PET, CT, MRI, and ultrasonography.
  3. Support tests, experiments, and procedures following standard protocols.
  4. Lead focus areas and understand related research projects/activities.
  5. Use experience to guide decision-making; plan and execute tasks.
  6. Develop practices and procedures for daily tasks.
  7. Maintain documentation, handle data, and archive as required by research and regulatory guidelines.
  8. Identify and report discrepancies and adverse events.
  9. Provide technical training in multiple areas.
  10. Ensure safety, quality control, and quality assurance standards are met, working within the animal care and use program.
  11. Review and maintain SOPs and protocols.
  12. Maintain facilities, supplies, medications, and equipment; report operational issues.
  13. Apply basic computer skills for compliance and training, including email, data entry, and Microsoft Office.
  14. Complete duties accurately to support pipeline activities and regulatory expectations.
Qualifications
  • Associates Degree in Science or Veterinary Technology; CVT required. 2+ years of Laboratory Animal Medicine or relevant clinical experience. AALAS certification preferred at the ALAT level (LAT preferred).
  • Knowledge of veterinary/laboratory animal medicine.
  • Proficiency in monitoring anesthesia and surgical prep across species.
  • Ability to review scientific literature and understand research principles.
  • Compliance with all relevant regulations (local, federal, GLP, FDA, USDA).
  • Strong attention to animal welfare and detail.
  • Problem-solving skills and initiative.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Physical ability to lift 50 pounds, stand, walk, and perform safety tasks.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.
