Veterinary Technician (General) - Emergency and Critical Care Services

About the Position

The Veterinary Technician will provide technical support and nursing care in the Emergency and Critical Care Service (ECC) at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. This role involves supervising and instructing veterinary students and technicians, performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and assisting in emergency situations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with staff and students to provide nursing care for emergency, critical, post-surgical, and other patients.
  • Perform triage, patient history, and initial stabilization procedures.
  • Recognize physical abnormalities and emergency signs, including cardiopulmonary arrest, and initiate CPR when necessary.
  • Administer medications, monitor vitals, perform venipuncture, cystocentesis, and other procedures.
  • Operate diagnostic equipment, record treatments, and assist with complex procedures like fluid therapy, intubation, and catheter placements.
  • Maintain detailed patient records and logs, and assist in equipment troubleshooting and maintenance.
Instruction and Maintenance
  • Provide instruction to students and clinicians on procedures and protocols.
  • Maintain workspaces and participate in on-call duties.
Physical and Environmental Demands

This position may require working evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. It involves physical activity, animal handling, exposure to animal waste, and potential hazards from chemicals and anesthetic gases.

Minimum Qualifications

Successful completion or current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Illinois Veterinary Technician Certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Knowledge of controlled substances, diagnostic equipment operation, and veterinary procedures.
  • Ability to instruct others, recognize vital sign abnormalities, and work effectively under pressure.
Employment Details
