National Veterinary Associates offers a unique externship opportunity for 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical experience in a supportive environment. Externs will work closely with veterinarians, enhancing their skills in patient management and communication, while earning a stipend to assist with living expenses.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, all share common features: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing patient care. Externs will also have opportunities to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. At Huron Animal Hospital, externships are designed for 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view the stipend amounts and HERE for details on the stipend program.
