An externship at a leading veterinary organization offers students vital hands-on experience in the clinical setting. Participants will work under experienced veterinarians, assisting in patient care and learning vital skills supported by a strong mentoring environment. Eligible students may also receive stipends for travel and living expenses.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing patient care. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here to view stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
