Externship Overview

An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides veterinary students with the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Although each NVA hospital is unique, they share a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and exceptional service to animals and their owners.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gather patient histories and perform physical examinations.
• Create treatment plans, conduct diagnostics, and provide dentistry services.
• Observe, assist, or perform surgical procedures.
• Manage patient medical care and practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Eligibility

All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships. Externship duration typically ranges from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules.

Stipend & Travel Expenses

Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Stipend amounts and program details are available on the NVA careers website.
