The externship at a leading veterinary hospital offers an engaging opportunity for veterinary students to gain hands-on experience in clinical operations. Students will work under the guidance of experienced veterinarians, enhancing their skills in patient assessments, treatment planning, and surgical observations. This program fosters a supportive learning environment and provides a stipend to cover living expenses.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing patient care. This externship also provides an opportunity to develop communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
The externship duration typically ranges from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here for stipend amounts and details on the program.
