National Veterinary Associates offers an externship program for veterinary students, providing hands-on experience in clinical operations alongside experienced Associate Veterinarians. This unique opportunity allows students to enhance their clinical skills and communication while working in a supportive environment committed to exceptional animal care.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting with surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships at Lafayette Veterinary Care Center.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. View stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
