Abqpetcarehospital offers an externship program in Anchorage, Alaska, for veterinary students aiming to gain essential hands-on clinical experience. This externship allows students to gather patient histories, perform exams, and assist in surgical procedures while managing medical care for patients.
Students looking to practice in Alaska post-graduation will receive priority for limited slots. A veterinary student permit is required prior to starting the externship, ensuring compliance with state regulations.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand day-to-day operations of the practice and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, they share common attributes: a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.
The external rotation is offered at Southside Animal Hospital and Wellness Center and ranges from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. It is a requirement of the State of Alaska that veterinary students in their final year hold a veterinary student permit before beginning an externship; requirements to obtain the permit are established by state regulations. Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
There are a limited number of externship slots available. Students with an interest in practicing in Alaska post‑graduation will be given top priority consideration for rotations.
