Job summary

Heartland Veterinary Partners is seeking a dedicated Veterinary Assistant to support veterinarians and technicians with patient care, monitor hospitalized pets, and assist with surgical procedures. You will educate clients, manage lab work, prepare prescriptions, and help with radiographs while maintaining a compassionate, team-focused environment.

You will handle routine in-house lab work, lab specimen tracking, and ensure clean, organized patient areas.

Qualifications

• Weekend availability is required.
• Previous veterinary experience preferred.
• Ability to lift patients or equipment up to 25 pounds; assist with heavier lifts as needed.
• Practice OSHA safety techniques including proper PPE.
• Basic math and the ability to calculate medication dosages.

Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery.
• Assist with outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs, and weights; provide client education.
• Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vital signs after surgery.
• Obtain and process lab samples; perform in-hospital tests and prepare specimens for outside labs.
• Take, develop, and maintain radiographs following safety procedures.
• Provide basic animal handling and restrain animals during exams.
• Administer and monitor medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments as directed.
• Keep exam rooms, treatment and lab areas clean; restock supplies.
• Demonstrate warmth, courtesy, and professionalism with clients; show compassion to patients.
• Communicate with veterinarians and team members about client discussions and patient plans.
