West Hills Animal Hospital in Huntington, NY is hiring an experienced Veterinary Assistant for a full-time, on-site role. Join a busy 24-hour practice dedicated to compassionate care for pets and their families, with opportunities to grow toward veterinary technician and leadership roles.

Responsibilities include assisting with exams, radiographs, medication administration, and ER readiness, in a fast-paced team environment.

Qualifications

• 1 year of general practice or emergency veterinary experience.
• Must be able to stand, lift, and perform tasks for 8+ hours daily.
• Ability to restrain dogs, cats, and exotic species for doctors and technicians.
• Strong attention to detail and clean, organized work habits.
• Own transportation to and from the hospital.

Responsibilities

• Caring for special needs patients such as diabetics, geriatrics, and epileptics.
• Restraint of canines, felines, and exotic species for procedures.
• Cleaning cages, surgical area, and equipment.
• Administering oral medications.
• Documenting general well-being of in-hospital patients and boarders.
• Assisting ER protocol, ensuring ER table is prepared for emergencies.
• Preparing surgical materials in coordination with the surgical handbook and ensuring sterility.
• Assisting LVTs with vital signs and wound checks.
• Triaging emergency appointments in coordination with the ER doctor on-premises.
• Capturing radiographs including thorax and abdominal views.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

• Caring for special needs borders such as diabetics, geriatrics, epileptics, etc.
• Restraining a variety of canine, feline, and exotic species for the doctors and technicians
• Cleaning (Sweeping, Mopping, cages, dishes, garbage, surgical site, dental Suite, etc.)
• Administering oral medications
• Documentation of general well-being of in-hospital patients and boarders
• Assisting with Er protocol, ensuring ER table is prepared for crashing patients
• Preparing surgical material in coordination with the surgical handbook (ensure materials are sterilized and prepared for procedures)
• Assisting LVTs with TPRs & blood pressures. examining incisions for cleanliness and closure
• Triaging emergency appointments in coordination with the ER doctor on-premises.
• Capturing various types of radiographs including but not limited to the thorax and abdominal views

• Lifting of large boxes, dog food, and a variety of canine and feline species up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to write neatly, communicate well with others, attend staff meetings, and adhere to training programs
• Own transportation
