Job summary

West Hills Animal Hospital & Emergency Center in Huntington, NY is seeking an experienced Veterinary Assistant to join our busy 24-hour hospital. You will care for a variety of animals, assist with exams, treatments, and emergencies, and work closely with our team.

The ideal candidate has at least 1 year of general practice or emergency experience, can lift up to 50 lbs, and thrives in a fast-paced environment. Full-time, with weekend coverage and rotating shifts.

Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year of general practice or emergency veterinary experience.
• Ability to stand, lift and perform duties for a full shift (up to 50 lbs).
• Strong organization, teamwork, and clear communication required.

Responsibilities

• Care for special needs patients and prepare them for doctors and technicians.
• Restrain canines, felines and exotics for exams and procedures.
• Maintain cleanliness of cages, labs and surgical areas.
• Administer oral medications and document patient well-being.
• Assist with ER protocols and prepare ER table for emergencies.
• Prepare surgical materials and coordinate with the surgical team.
• Assist LVTs with vital signs and wound checks.
• Triaging emergency appointments with ER doctor on-site.
• Capture radiographs including thorax and abdomen.

As a Veterinary Assistant, you'll build meaningful relationships not only with our patients but also with the clients who trust us with their pets' care. You'll work alongside a supportive team in a fast-paced environment where you'll have opportunities to grow your skills and advance your career—from becoming a veterinary technician to exploring specialty medicine and future leadership opportunities.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

• Caring for special needs borders such as diabetics, geriatrics, epileptics, etc.
• Restraining a variety of canine, feline, and exotic species for the doctors and technicians
• Cleaning (Sweeping, Mopping, cages, dishes, garbage, surgical site, dental Suite, etc.)
• Administering oral medications
• Documentation of general well-being of in-hospital patients and boarders
• Assisting with Er protocol, ensuring ER table is prepared for crashing patients
• Preparing surgical material in coordination with the surgical handbook (ensure materials are sterilized and prepared for procedures)
• Assisting LVTs with TPRs & blood pressures. examining incisions for cleanliness and closure
• Triaging emergency appointments in coordination with the ER doctor on-premises.
• Capturing various types of radiographs including but not limited to the thorax and abdominal views

• Ability to write neatly, communicate well with others, attend staff meetings, and adhere to training programs
• Own transportation
