Job summary

West Hills Animal Hospital in Huntington, NY is seeking an experienced Veterinary Assistant to join a busy 24-hour team. You will care for patients, support doctors and technicians, and help clients understand care plans.

This is a full-time position with growth opportunities toward veterinary technician duties and specialty medicine. The schedule includes Mon–Sat shifts 8a–3p or 8a–5:30p, with an emphasis on compassionate animal care and strong teamwork in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• 1 year of general practice or emergency veterinary experience
• Must be able to stand, lift, and do work duties for a minimum of 8 hours
• Excellent communication with clients and team members
• Commitment to compassionate animal care

Responsibilities

• Caring for special needs borders such as diabetics, geriatrics, epileptics, etc.
• Restrain canines, felines, and exotic species for doctors and technicians
• Cleaning tasks including cages, dishes, and surgical area
• Administering oral medications
• Documenting patient well-being in-hospital
• Assist with ER protocol and ensure ER table readiness
• Prepare surgical materials per handbook and maintain sterility
• Assist LVTs with vitals and incision checks
• Triaging emergency appointments with ER doctor on-site
• Capture radiographs including thorax and abdomen views

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

• Caring for special needs borders such as diabetics, geriatrics, epileptics, etc.
• Restraining a variety of canine, feline, and exotic species for the doctors and technicians
• Cleaning (Sweeping, Mopping, cages, dishes, garbage, surgical site, dental Suite, etc.)
• Administering oral medications
• Documentation of general well-being of in-hospital patients and boarders
• Assisting with Er protocol, ensuring ER table is prepared for crashing patients
• Preparing surgical material in coordination with the surgical handbook (ensure materials are sterilized and prepared for procedures)
• Assisting LVTs with TPRs & blood pressures. examining incisions for cleanliness and closure
• Triaging emergency appointments in coordination with the ER doctor on-premises.
• Capturing various types of radiographs including but not limited to the thorax and abdominal views
