Petco is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to support the Vetco Total Care hospital team in Bay Shore. You will greet clients, record vital signs, and help manage medical records while delivering compassionate care to patients and their owners.

You will assist veterinarians with appointments, surgery, dentistry, and anesthesia, ensuring patient safety and optimal outcomes. Strong communication and teamwork are essential in this fast-paced hospital setting.

Qualifications

• Preferred to have at least 1-year previous experience working in veterinary practice or sufficient relatable animal care experience.
• Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Must be compassionate and sympathetic, and be able to maintain a professional attitude and demeanor during emotional and stressful situations.
• Must have telephone and computer skills.
• Must be a team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments, offer creative ideas, and accept change.

Responsibilities

• Greet clients and patients arriving for appointments, obtain vitals, and record the EMR.
• Assist doctors with appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision.
• Perform patient restraint, obtain lab samples, handle meds, and help maintain EMR.
• Schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results, and update records.
• Prepare patients for procedures and assist anesthesia; monitor during recovery and discharge.
• Provide in-hospital treatments, administer meds, and monitor patient welfare.
• Assist in training new staff and share knowledge as required.
• Keep hospital environment neat and maintain maintenance schedules.
