Banfield Pet Hospital is seeking a Veterinary Assistant for the Clive location. The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in delivering high quality, safe care to pets and clients.

Job Summary

The Veterinary Assistant is a key member of the hospital team who supports and assists the veterinarians and veterinary technicians, ensuring the safety of pets, clients and other associates, and the continuity of quality veterinary care.

Preferred Education / Licenses

Certificate of completion from a NAVTA‑approved veterinary assistant program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Preferred Experience

Must be able to perform all required skills of NAVTA‑approved veterinary assistant programs at a level that aids in the efficiency of the practice.

A Day in the Life
  • Provide professional, efficient and exceptional service, ensuring clients and pets are comfortable.
  • Use technical skills on a daily basis within state practice acts and NAVTA guidelines.
  • Maintain patient flow.
  • Communicate with the veterinarian and vet techs.
  • Carry out or set up procedures that do not require veterinarian or vet tech assistance.
  • Adhere to hospital standards that keep pets safe, and keep treatment areas, exam rooms and labs clean and organized.
  • Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans and the importance of preventive care.
  • Mentor other members of the hospital team.

Special Working Conditions
  • Work at a computer for long periods of time.
  • Confidence around pets (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, etc.).
  • Availability for weekend support.
  • Reasoning, remembering, mathematics and language ability in English required.
  • Moderately high noise level.
  • Ambulatory skill to perform duties while at hospital, including standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching and climbing.
  • Lift, carry, move up to 50 pounds.
  • Good hand‑eye coordination, arm‑hand‑finger dexterity and visual acuity for keyboard and equipment use.
  • Exposure to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, as well as occasional exposure to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and medication/controlled substances.

Pay Range

Hourly pay range: $15.19 – $19.41. The specific rate is determined based on the candidate’s experience, skill level, and education, and may vary depending on location or applicable minimum wage laws.
