Job description

Job Purpose

The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in delivering quality veterinary care, advocating for pets, educating clients, and maintaining a safe hospital environment.

Responsibilities

• Act as an extra set of eyes, ears, and hands to maximize veterinarian and technician productivity.
• Communicate with veterinarians, technicians and associates to keep patient flow.
• Provide professional, efficient and exceptional service, including performing or preparing procedures that do not require veterinarian or technician assistance.
• Complete preparatory work for other procedures and monitor hospitalized or surgical pets as allowed in state practice acts.
• Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventive care, pet health needs, hospital services and related issues.
• Gather relevant information and history from clients and maintain accurate medical charts.
• Ensure safety of pets, clients and associates using safe restraining techniques, protocols, and keeping treatment areas clean, sterile, and organized.
• Assist with surgery as applicable within state practice acts and NAVTA guidelines.
• Mentor other paraprofessionals in the hospital.
• Other duties as assigned.

Special Working Conditions

Requires long periods at a computer, ability to work around a variety of pets, and may exceed 40 hours per week including weekends and evenings. Must perform ambulation tasks such as standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing and lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires good hand‑eye coordination, visual acuity, and ability to read, write, and speak English. Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and controlled substances.

Compensation

Hourly pay range: $18.40 – $23.51, based on experience, skill level, and education.
