Role Description

This on-site Veterinary Anesthesia Technician role is based in Gainesville, FL and supports the anesthesia needs of patients within the teaching hospital and clinical service areas. The technician assists veterinarians and veterinary students in planning, administering, and monitoring anesthesia for a variety of species, including small and large animals. Day-to-day responsibilities include pre-anesthetic evaluation, equipment preparation, induction and maintenance of anesthesia, intraoperative monitoring of vital parameters, and safe recovery of patients. The role also involves maintaining anesthesia machines and related equipment, ensuring accurate medical record documentation, and adhering to safety and infection-control protocols. The technician collaborates with faculty, house officers, and students, contributing to a teaching environment by demonstrating best practices and supporting a high standard of patient care.

Qualifications

• Formal veterinary technology education and credentials (e.g., graduation from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program; certification or licensure as a Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Nurse preferred).
• Demonstrated experience in veterinary anesthesia and analgesia, including pre-anesthetic assessment, induction, maintenance, and recovery for a range of species.
• Proficiency in patient monitoring techniques (e.g., ECG, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, capnography) and recognition of abnormal trends or emergencies.
• Strong technical skills in venipuncture, catheter placement, airway management, and safe handling and restraint of small and large animals.
• Knowledge of pharmacology related to anesthetic drugs, analgesics, sedatives, and emergency medications, with the ability to calculate and administer accurate dosages.
• Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and clean anesthesia machines, ventilators, and associated monitoring equipment according to hospital protocols.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills for collaborating with veterinarians, students, and hospital staff in a teaching and clinical environment.
