ER/ICU Medical Support Supervisor

Position Overview

Triangle Veterinary Referral Hospital is seeking an experienced and motivated ER/ICU Medical Support Supervisor to provide hands‑on leadership for our Emergency and Intensive Care Unit medical support teams. This is a working supervisor position, with a minimum of 75% of time spent on the clinical floor alongside the team. The ideal candidate is a strong veterinary professional who enjoys developing people, improving processes, supporting high‑quality patient care, and building collaborative relationships between medical support staff, clinicians, and hospital leadership. The ER/ICU Medical Support Supervisor is responsible for the day‑to‑day leadership of the ER/ICU support team, including staffing, scheduling, training, performance management, workflow, and professional development. This individual will serve as an important connection between frontline team members, clinicians, and hospital leadership while helping create a positive, accountable, and supportive team culture.

What You’ll Do

Clinical & Floor Leadership

• Work directly alongside the ER/ICU medical support team, maintaining a minimum of 75% clinical floor presence.
• Provide hands‑on leadership, coaching, support, and direction during daily operations.
• Coordinate ER/ICU workflow and staffing based on patient census, acuity, caseload, and hospital needs.
• Assist with patient care and provide floor coverage when needed.
• Identify and address immediate patient care, staffing, workflow, and team concerns.
• Collaborate closely with ER/ICU clinicians to support efficient patient flow and high‑quality patient care.
• Promote strong communication and teamwork between medical support staff, clinicians, Client Services, and other hospital departments.

Team Leadership & Development

• Recruit, interview, onboard, train, and develop ER/ICU medical support team members.
• Create and maintain effective training plans for new and existing employees.
• Conduct regular employee check‑ins, coaching conversations, and performance evaluations.
• Provide timely recognition, feedback, and performance guidance.
• Establish clear expectations and promote accountability across the team.
• Address performance, attendance, and employee concerns in partnership with hospital leadership and Human Resources.
• Support employee engagement, retention, professional development, and opportunities for growth.

Operations & Scheduling

• Develop and maintain staff schedules, including regular, holiday, and on‑call coverage.
• Monitor staffing levels, overtime, and coverage needs.
• Review and approve employee timecards.
• Develop and improve ER/ICU policies, protocols, workflows, and patient care processes.
• Lead department meetings, team huddles, and other service‑specific meetings.
• Partner with appropriate hospital team members to support inventory, purchasing, and equipment needs.
• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, communication, patient care, and overall team workflow.

Collaboration & Hospital Leadership

• Build strong relationships with medical support staff, clinicians, fellow supervisors, and hospital leadership.
• Meet regularly with ER/ICU clinicians and leadership to discuss staffing, patient care, training, workflow, and service needs.
• Serve as a liaison between frontline team members, clinicians, and hospital leadership.
• Encourage open communication, feedback, collaboration, and mutual respect.
• Promote a positive team culture centered on patient care, professionalism, accountability, and teamwork.
• Support hospital‑wide initiatives and collaborate with other departments as needed.
• Participate in the hospital leadership on‑call rotation for time‑sensitive operational needs.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding employee, client, patient, and hospital information.

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience as a veterinary technician, veterinary assistant, veterinary nurse, or comparable veterinary medical support professional.
• Strong clinical knowledge and the ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced veterinary environment.
• Excellent communication, organization, problem‑solving, and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a veterinary healthcare team.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years of leadership, supervisory, or Lead experience.
• Experience in emergency, critical care, specialty, or referral veterinary medicine.
• Credentialed Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, CVT) preferred where applicable.
• Experience with employee training, onboarding, coaching, scheduling, or performance management.

Schedule & Work Environment

This is a full‑time leadership position within a 24/7 emergency and specialty veterinary hospital. The position requires flexibility based on departmental and hospital needs and may include rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, on‑call responsibilities, and work during inclement weather. This is an active clinical position requiring standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and other activities associated with veterinary patient care. The employee must be able to frequently lift and/or move patients or items weighing up to 50 pounds, utilizing appropriate assistance and equipment when necessary.
