Salary: Starting at $20+ per hour

Summary | Are you a new Captain with a 50-ton or higher license and looking for a career change or point-of-entry in a booming industry? Are you a retired Captain seeking supplemental income with a flexible schedule? Do you 'follow the sun' on your boat and need an east coast stop and part-time work? You may have found it with the Baltimore Water Taxi! We are seeking qualified candidates for the role of 'Captain' onboard a Water Taxi.

What does a Water Taxi Captain do?

A Water Taxi Captain is a senior navigational officer and front-line representative responsible primarily for the safety of the vessel, crew, and passengers. The Captain also manages crew and ensures customers have a positive experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure passenger safety and adhere to sailing schedules
  • Operate the vessel safely considering conditions and posted limits
  • Exercise sound judgment and seamanship
  • Follow procedures for start-up, operations, and shutdown, especially in adverse weather
  • Participate in, log, and complete crew drills and training
  • Maintain familiarity with vessel handling, policies, and safety procedures
  • Conduct checks of operational, structural, and navigational equipment
  • Manage crew focusing on safety, security, appearance, customer service, and brand image
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Team Development/Leadership

  • Promote high performance and continuous improvement
  • Drive innovation within the crew
  • Mentor and develop crew through supportive feedback
  • Ensure compliance with maritime safety regulations (OSHA, USCG, DOT)

Requirements

  • US Coast Guard License for vessels 50+ GRT on Inland Waters
  • TWIC credential
  • Consent to drug, alcohol, and background checks
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification
  • Flexible working hours as required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, neat appearance, and ability to follow instructions
  • Ability to tread water for at least 5 minutes
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions
  • Physical ability to lift at least 40 lbs and perform related tasks

Qualifications

  • Passion for creating nautical mini-adventures connecting city charms
  • Minimum 2 years of commercial passenger vessel operation
  • Experience in maritime transportation and for-profit management
  • Leadership skills and experience in team building
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work independently and in teams, adaptable to change
  • Strong interpersonal skills

Supervisory Responsibility

Leads all crew members onboard and supporting vessels

Pay

Starting at $20/hour for first-year licensed Captains with minimal experience; higher rates negotiable for those with 3+ years of experience operating commercial passenger vessels.
