Job summary

Duke Energy in Charlotte, NC seeks a skilled Vehicle Maintenance Technician II to perform preventative maintenance, inspections and basic repairs on a wide range of utility vehicles and equipment. The role includes required DOT/FMCSR compliance and the potential to work on field locations.

Candidates should have an associate degree or certificate in auto, diesel, or heavy equipment mechanics and must obtain a Class A CDL within 6 months. Experience with hydraulics and diesel engines is preferred.

Qualifications

• Must have an Associates degree or certificate in auto, diesel, or heavy equipment mechanics, or equivalent work experience.
• Two-year associate degree or certificate in auto, diesel, or heavy equipment mechanics with related experience.
• Must obtain and maintain a Class A CDL within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance inspections on light and medium vehicles/equipment.
• Assist with FMCSR and DOT inspections.
• Diagnose and repair vehicles and powered equipment (gas & diesel).
• Troubleshoot electric system components, cranking, lighting and charging.
• Maintain technical competence for diagnostic work and repairs.

Job description

Job Summary

This position is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, inspections and basic repairs on utility vehicles and industrial equipment. Includes, but is not limited to generators, forklifts, aerial equipment, cranes, amphibious equipment, off- road digging equipment, passenger cars, pickup trucks, SUV’s, medium and heavy trucks, and trailers. Maintenance operations may take place in the garage or at field locations during various work schedules depending on business needs.

Responsibilities & Duties

• Performs preventative maintenance (PM) inspections on light & medium duty vehicles/equipment and assists higher classification of technicians with PM’s on all vehicles and equipment.
• Performs required State emission inspections.
• Assists with Federal DOT inspections.
• Adheres to all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) for DOT inspections.
• Provides assistance on dielectric test inspections.
• Performs diagnostics and repairs on light and medium vehicles, (gas & diesel) forklifts, trailers and powered equipment.
• Maintains the appropriate level of technical competence required to diagnose and repair vehicles/equipment.
• Performs hydraulic brake systems and component repairs.
• Assists with hydraulic component repairs.
• Assists with air brake system inspections and repairs.
• Assists higher classification of technicians with diagnostics and repairs on all vehicles/equipment.
• Troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs basic electric system components, cranking, lighting, charging and assist with basic A/C systems and component repairs.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relative experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

• Vehicle Maintenance Technician II Must have an Associates degree or certificate in auto, diesel, or heavy equipment mechanics from a vocational school; OR at least one year of related work experience in lieu of a degree. Must successfully obtain and maintain a Class A CDL license within 6 months of hire date.
• Vehicle Maintenance Technician II Two-year associate degree or certificate in auto, diesel, or heavy equipment mechanics from a vocational school In addition to required education above, two (2) years minimum of related experience In lieu of the required education, high school diploma AND three (3) years minimum of related experience.

Working Conditions

• Work Schedule: Monday through Friday
• Must have a valid driver’s license
• Must be able to obtain "CDL Class A" driver's license within a designated (120 days) timeframe
• Must be able to respond to emergency situations
• Must be able to stand and walk on concrete surface for extended periods of time
• Must be able to work in garage environment with associated noise, fumes and dust and tolerate heights in aerial devices
• Must be able to lift and/or push at least 100lbs several times per shift
• Must be able to carry at least 50 lbs a distance of at least 25 feet
• Repeated bending and twisting are required
• Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility.
• This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading
