Job summary

Duke Energy is seeking a student-intern/entry-level technician to perform preventative maintenance and inspections on light to medium duty vehicles and equipment in the Florence, SC and Charlotte, NC areas.

The role supports diagnostics, repairs, and compliance with FMCSR regulations, with opportunities for hands-on learning in a garage or field setting. Enrollment in an Automotive Technology program and a valid driver's license are required, with May 2027 graduation not allowed.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a two-year Automotive Technology program with GPA 2.75+
• Valid Driver's License required
• Must not graduate prior to May 2027
• Ability to stand, walk, lift, and perform manual tasks in garage environments

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance inspections on light and medium duty vehicles and assist higher classification technicians
• Assist with Federal DOT inspections and FMCSR compliance
• Diagnose and repair basic vehicle systems and hydraulic components
• Support with air brake and diesel/electric system inspections and repairs
• Triage basic electrical, lighting, and charging system issues and assist with A/C components

Locations: Charlotte, NC: Florence, SC

This position is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, inspections and basic repairs on utility vehicles and equipment. Includes, but is not limited to passenger cars, pickup trucks, SUV's, medium and heavy trucks, trailers and off-road equipment. Maintenance operations may take place in the garage or at field locations during various work schedules depending on business needs.

Responsibilities

• Performs preventative maintenance (PM) inspections on light & medium duty vehicles/equipment and assists higher classification of technicians withPM's on all vehicles and equipment.
• Assists with Federal DOT inspections.
• Adheres to all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) for DOT inspections.
• Provides assistance on dielectric test inspections.
• Performs diagnostics and repairs on light and medium vehicles, trailers and powered equipment.
• Maintains the appropriate level of technical competence required to diagnose and repair vehicles/equipment.
• Performs hydraulic brake systems and component repairs.
• Assists with hydraulic component repairs.
• Assists with air brake system inspections and repairs.
• Assists higher classification of technicians with diagnostics and repairs on all vehicles/equipment.
• Troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs basic electric system components, cranking, lighting, charging and assist with basic A/C systems and component repairs.

Basic/Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled and pursuing a two-year degree in Automotive Technology or similar field
• Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75
• Valid Driver's License
• Must not graduate prior to May 2027

Working Conditions

• Potential for both full-time and part-time opportunities.
• Must have a valid driver's license
• Must be able to stand and walk on concrete surface for extended periods of time
• Must be able to work in garage environment with associated noise, fumes and dust and tolerate heights in aerial devices
• Must be able to lift and/or push at least 100lbs several times per shift
• Must be able to carry at least 50 lbs a distance of at least 25 feet
• Repeated bending and twisting is required
