Job description

This position requires the skilled and safe operation of a tractor trailer used for transporting cargo on lengthy trips in and out of state. The employee is responsible for the security and good condition of the load, extensive record keeping, route planning, and determination. Duties include but are not limited to; loading, unloading, and transporting cargo using a tractor trailer for distribution of inventory from the Central Inventory Warehouse to the 14 NCDOT Divisions. Inspecting cargo loads prior to departure for proper balance and delivering in a timely manner. The ability to prepare and maintain records and reports of transportation operations, planning and selecting appropriate delivery routes, understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions, assisting with the preparation and execution of an annual physical inventory count and completing special projects. Other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of ICC rules and regulations and defensive driving techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to use safe methods of unloading and loading vehicles to secure proper and even distribution of load.
  • Experience driving a manual tractor trailer truck with cargo.
  • Demonstrated ability to service and provide minor maintenance to vehicles and auxiliary equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and maintain records and reports of transportation operations.

Additional Expectations

Applicant must either be in possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFT 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional Requirements Must possess necessary licenses or certifications to operate assigned types of vehicles or equipment.
