The hiring range for this position is $33,566.74 (minimum salary) to $46,226.51 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for the Equipment Operator I.
The hiring range for this position is $35,266.06 (minimum salary) to $48,544.91 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for the Equipment Operator II.
The hiring range for this position is $37,051.40 (minimum salary) to $51,025.41 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for the Heavy Equipment Operator.
The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment in support of the installation, repair, and maintenance of projects for the Environmental Services division. Success in this position provides for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of assistance.
The work consists of related duties in the operation of heavy equipment. Work performed in inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
Major Duties
- Operates heavy and specialized equipment in support of the department;
- Operates dump truck, bucket truck, tractor trailer, tractor, and hydraulic boom.
- Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment as necessary.
- Responds to after-hours emergency calls.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Guidelines
- Guidelines include city ordinances, policies, and procedures, relevant federal and state laws and regulations, OSHA standards, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
Supervisory/Management Responsibility
- This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel.
Equipment Operator I
Education/Experience Requirements
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of hire.
Knowledge Requirements
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment dump truck, tractor trailer, tractor, and hydraulic boom.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of relevant safety procedures and guidelines.
- Skill in the use of heavy equipment such as dump truck, tractor trailer, tractor, and hydraulic boom.
- Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.
- Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
Equipment Operator II
Education/Experience Requirements
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of hire.
Knowledge Requirements
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy and/or specialized equipment utilized;
- Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation;
- Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws and regulations;
- Knowledge of city ordinances, policies, and procedures;
- Knowledge of the geography of the city and of assigned routes;
- Knowledge of relevant departmental policies, safety procedures, and guidelines.
- Skill in the use of equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended period, often under unfavorable weather conditions;
- Ability to work independently without close supervision;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and supervisors.
Heavy Equipment Operator
