Job summary

Methodist Healthcare System in San Antonio, TX seeks a qualified Vascular Technologist (Sonographer) to perform arterial/venous Dopplers and vascular imaging under physician orders. You will apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, physics, and instrumentation to assist in accurate diagnoses while maintaining equipment and supplies.

The role requires ARDMS certification in RVT or RVS, with education options including ultrasonography, radiologic technology, vascular technology, or an AS degree.

  • Demonstrates good judgment in responding to STAT calls and prioritizing STAT orders.
  • Follows safety policies and infection control/universal precautions.
  • Maintains all patient reports and uses Cardiology PAC System.

Job Summary And Qualifications

The Vascular Technologist (Sonographer) performs diagnostic procedures to include arterial/venous Dopplers and vascular imaging as directed by physician order. The sonographer utilizes and maintains a background in anatomy, physiology, physics and instrumentation to provide technical information to aid the physician. He/she maintains department supplies and equipment and participates in the quality control initiatives of the department.

Minimum Education, Experience, Training, Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities and Other Job-Related Characteristics
  • Education: ONE of the following:
  • Successful completion of training program in either:
  • Ultrasonography
  • Radiologic Technology
  • Vascular Technology
  • Associates of Science or higher degree
  • Experience: None
  • Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility and department/unit which are specific to the needs of the patient population served (if applicable).
  • Preferred: Two (2) years vascular technologist in a hospital or diagnostic imaging clinic
Minimum License, Certificates, or Registrations Required

Must have and maintain American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in either:

  • RVT – Registered Vascular Technologist
  • RVS – Registered Vascular Specialist
Essential Job Functions
  • Maintains skills and understanding of innovation in techniques and equipment in medical sonography.
  • Acquires signed physician orders with appropriate indicator for all exams. Demonstrates good judgment in responding to STAT calls and demonstrates the ability to prioritize STAT orders.
  • Follows safety policies and procedures applicable to the job, recognizes impending crisis situations and institutes measures (such as adjusting priorities) to prevent further complications. Transports patients between the lab and other units as directed.
  • Understands and follows infection control/universal precautions in the performance of all job tasks. Maintains order and cleanliness of the work area. Always practices sterile techniques and prevents cross contamination.
  • Maintaining all patient reports. This includes but is not limited to the following: pulling all previous reports/images, presenting images to the correct reading physician, notifying reading physicians of requests, and entering proper patient charges into Meditech. Responsible for the proper use of the Cardiology PAC System.
  • Orders supplies and checks each month for supply needs and orders appropriate amounts at the beginning of each month; assists with all daily/monthly reports.
Additional Job Functions
  • May have access to radiopharmaceuticals, contrast agents and other non-controlled medications as appropriate to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Orients new staff to the department and supervises students as directed by the Unit Director.
  • Supports the mission and vision of the Methodist Healthcare System and demonstrates excellent customer service at all times. Understands and is committed to helping the Methodist Healthcare System and its associated facilities achieve its goals.
  • Must learn and comply with System and facility safety policies and rules; must use appropriate safety equipment and procedures at all times; must immediately report all unsafe conditions to supervisors; must be familiar with all safety features of equipment, tools or materials encompassed by job duties; and must check with supervisors (prior to job performance) if there is a question as to the safe procedure to be used for any job function.
  • Adheres to the MHS Code of Conduct and demonstrates ethical behavior as expected by our patients, colleagues and the community. Understands the personal obligation to report any activity that appears to violate applicable laws, rules regulations or the Code of Conduct itself.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
