Job summary

Sylvania in Grand Rapids seeks a Varsity Assistant Wrestling Coach for the 2026/2027 school year. The role supports the head coach, helps plan practices and travel, coordinates with assistants, and develops student athletes both academically and athletically, fostering teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship.

Qualifications include wrestling experience and coaching background, knowledge of weight training and conditioning, CPR/First Aid recommended, and a valid Michigan teaching certificate

Qualifications

• Successful high school or college experience in wrestling
• Experience as a coach/assistant coach preferred
• Demonstrate working knowledge of wrestling
• Knowledge of weight training and conditioning techniques
• Previous experience working with students
• Interest in and aptitude for head coach responsibilities
• MHSAA P.A. C.E. program recommended for coaches
• Knowledge of CPR and First Aid recommended
• Coaching administrative experience

Responsibilities

• Work as a team member of the coaching staff
• Prepare training/practice sessions, athletic contest preparations and team travel arrangements
• Work closely with the Athletic Director in scheduling athletic contests
• Delegate responsibility to assistant coaches
• Maintain professional competency by attending clinics and meetings
• Provide safe environment for student athletes as assigned by the district
• Demonstrate leadership to promote academic development and competitive performance
• Communicate effectively with parents, administration, players and staff
• Submit annual contest results and records
• Oversee equipment issuance, cleaning, storage, and care
• Assist in purchasing equipment, supplies and uniforms
• Oversee safety conditions during practice
• Enforce discipline and fair play standards
• Report incidents to Athletic Director
• Attend practices and contests punctually
• Maintain appropriate conduct and decorum
• Maintain player eligibility and medical forms
• Teach skills for highest possible achievement
• Adhere to MHSAA and district policies
• Assist in interviewing prospective assistant coaches
• Perform other duties as assigned by Athletic Director
