Qualifications

  • Communicate with dispatch and staff for timely and accurate deliveries or transport.
  • Support district events and operations, such as inter-site deliveries and field trips.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and reliability when interacting with students, families, and staff.

Job description

The impact you will have: As a Van Driver, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe and reliable transportation of students, staff, and materials across the district. You will operate district vehicles in a professional and courteous manner while maintaining schedules, adhering to traffic and safety regulations, and supporting the smooth operation of school and department activities. Our Van Drivers demonstrate a commitment to safety, service, and teamwork—helping students and staff arrive safely, on time, and ready to learn. As a Van Driver, you will be responsible for (but not limited to):

  • Safely operating district vans and vehicles to transport students, staff, mail, and materials between school sites and district facilities.
  • Conducting pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections, reporting any maintenance or safety concerns immediately.
  • Adhering to all traffic laws, district policies, and safety regulations at all times.
  • Maintaining vehicle cleanliness and readiness, including fueling, minor upkeep, and organizing cargo.
  • Communicating effectively with dispatch, administrators, and staff to ensure timely and accurate deliveries or transport.
  • Supporting district events and operations, such as inter-site deliveries, field trips, and emergency transportation needs.
  • Demonstrating professionalism, courtesy, and reliability in all interactions with students, families, and staff.

What you need for this position:

  • Completion of 10th grade or equivalent

SB 848 Child Safety & Employment Disclosure Requirement

Effective January 1, 2026, in accordance with California Senate Bill 848 (School Employee Misconduct/Child Abuse Prevention Act), applicants for employment with San José Unified are subject to enhanced child safety, training, and employment disclosure requirements.

Under SB 848, schools are required to strengthen background vetting procedures and obtain employment history information related to allegations of egregious misconduct involving students. Former employers may be contacted to release records regarding substantiated findings of misconduct as permitted by law. Failure to provide complete and accurate information regarding prior educational employment or relevant misconduct findings may result in disqualification from the hiring process or withdrawal of an offer of employment.

SB 848 also expands mandated reporter requirements and requires annual child abuse prevention training for employees and certain volunteers by July 1, 2026. All employees must comply with district-adopted child safety policies, including procedures for supervising and protecting students.
