San José Unified is seeking a Lead Fleet Maintenance professional to provide leadership and technical expertise for a safe, reliable district fleet. You will oversee daily maintenance, guide a team, and ensure repairs and preventative work meet safety standards.

Qualifications

As a Lead Fleet Maintenance professional in San José Unified, you will provide leadership and technical expertise to ensure the district’s vehicles are safe, reliable, and ready to support daily operations. You will oversee and coordinate maintenance work, guide team members, and ensure repairs and preventative maintenance are completed efficiently and in compliance with all safety regulations. Through strong leadership, organization, and a commitment to high standards, you will play a critical role in maintaining a dependable fleet that supports students, staff, and the broader school community. As a Lead Fleet Maintenance, you will be responsible for (but not limited to):
  • Leading and coordinating daily fleet maintenance operations to ensure vehicles are safe, reliable, and ready for use.
  • Performing and overseeing diagnostics, inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs on district vehicles, including buses, trucks, and service vehicles.
  • Assigning and prioritizing work, ensuring tasks are completed accurately, efficiently, and in a timely manner.
  • Guiding, supporting, and reviewing the work of team members to maintain high-quality standards.
  • Ensuring compliance with all safety regulations, including state and federal transportation and inspection requirements.
  • Maintaining accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities.
  • Coordinating parts, supplies, and external services needed for repairs and maintenance.
  • Monitoring fleet condition and recommending improvements or preventative strategies to reduce downtime.
  • Maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Communicating effectively with supervisors, team members, and stakeholders regarding fleet status and needs.
What you need for this position:
  • Completion of 12th grade or equivalent
  • California Class Bdriver's licensewith passenger and air brake endorsements
  • Commercial Medical Certificate
  • Air Brake and BIT Inspection certifications
  • Diesel Engine Repair – 3 years experience
  • Resume and Letter of introduction outlining desire and qualifications for this position

SB 848 Child Safety & Employment Disclosure Requirement

Effective January 1, 2026, in accordance with California Senate Bill 848 (School Employee Misconduct/Child Abuse Prevention Act), applicants for employment with San José Unified are subject to enhanced child safety, training, and employment disclosure requirements.

Under SB 848, schools are required to strengthen background vetting procedures and obtain employment history information related to allegations of egregious misconduct involving students. Former employers may be contacted to release records regarding substantiated findings of misconduct as permitted by law. Failure to provide complete and accurate information regarding prior educational employment or relevant misconduct findings may result in disqualification from the hiring process or withdrawal of an offer of employment.

SB 848 also expands mandated reporter requirements and requires annual child abuse prevention training for employees and certain volunteers by July 1, 2026. All employees must comply with district-adopted child safety policies, including procedures for supervising and protecting students.
