Job summary

Ventura Unified School District is seeking candidates to join the Transportation Department to transport students to and from school and activities, assist drivers with loading and monitoring, and provide behavior support during transit.

Under supervision, operate a district vehicle up to nine passengers, meet licensing and training requirements, and comply with district policies. Eligible hires may enter an advanced placement and salary steps; district emphasizes safety and professional conduct.

  • Alternatively, current enrollment in or completion of VUSD’s Bus Driver Training Program meets the experience requirement.

Job description

OPEN OPPORTUNITY

To fill vacancies in the Transportation Department, and to establish an eligibility list to fill future vacancies. The established eligibility list will remain in effect for six months. Applicants will be screened according to a needs-basis and when the eligibility list has expired or become exhausted.

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist in the transportation of students to and from school and activities; assist drivers in the loading, unloading, securing and monitoring of students; provide behavior support and guidance to the students while being transported; operate a district vehicle (up to a nine passenger vehicle) for the purposes of providing safe and secure transportation for students.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to graduation from high school (or equivalent) and six months of experience working with children and/or young adolescence. Alternatively, individuals currently enrolled in or who have completed VUSD’s Bus Driver Training Program will be considered to have met the experience requirement.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License
  • Possess and maintain a safe driving record (DMV H-6).
  • Valid NCPI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) training and certification;employees must fulfill certification requirements within the first six (6) months of the probationary period.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certifications; employees must fulfill certification requirements within the first three (3) months of the probationary period.
ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION:

New Hires – Initial Salary Placement

The District has established criteria in place that recognizes the education and experience new employees bring to their role in supporting students and the services of the District. Upon approval of the Director of Classified Human Resources, a new employee may be provided with advanced step placement up to Step 5 based on the following criteria:

  • Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class (limited to no more than one step for each two years of experience related to the classification)
  • Additional education at the college level beyond the educational requirements established for entry into the class (limited to no more than one step for each two years of education related to the position) To be considered for advanced salary placement upon hire transcripts and/or diploma must be provided

All new hires placed at Step 1 of the salary schedule will advance to Step 2 after successfully completing the six-month probationary period.

Longevity increments are offered based on years of service with the District: an additional 1.20% of base salary after completing 4 years of service, 4.10% at 9 years, 7.08% at 14 years, 10.15% at 19 years, 13.31% at 24 years, 16.46% at 29 years.

Promotional and/or transfer candidates will be placed at the appropriate step in accordance with established Personnel Commission Rules & Regulations.

Education Incentives

All active, regular classified employees are eligible for an education incentive if they possess a college degree , regardless of when degree was earned, for degrees above and beyond the stated minimum qualifications in their current classification. Courses must be taken at an accredited college or university and proof of degree must be submitted to HR.

AA/AS = 2.50%

BA/BS = 4.00%

MA/MS = 5.00%

Ed.D./Ph.D/JD = 6.00%

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS (Upon Offer of Employment)
  • Employment Verification: The Immigration Reform and Control Act requires that the District obtain documentation from every individual who is employed which verifies identity and authorizes his/her right to work in the United States.
  • Individuals selected for employment are required to submit to a tuberculosis risk assessment, and, if risk factors are identified, would then be required to submit to a tuberculosis examination to determine freedom from tuberculosis.
  • The District reserves the right to require a job related physical examination and satisfactory results from such an exam.
  • Fingerprinting: State law requires that all employees be fingerprinted. AB1610 prohibits employment until the Department of Justice completes its obligations regarding the arrest and conviction information, and from employing a person who has been convicted of a violent or serious felony, as defined.
  • All candidates with a conviction record for offenses other than minor traffic violations, must file a conviction record statement with their application. Such a conviction, or failure to report a record of convictions, may bar you from employment.
  • Other: Eligibles will be required to provide a current DMV report and/or proof of auto insurance to the Classified Human Resources Department before being certified for a final selection interview for positions that require the employee to drive a district vehicle and/or hold a valid California driver's license.
