Job summary

Educational Service Center of Central Ohio is seeking a part-time Van Driver to support student transportation and safety. You will drive students to and from school and events, assist with loading, and ensure proper car-seat handling and daily van maintenance.

The role requires a clean background, valid Ohio license, and the ability to work mornings and afternoons on weekdays. Candidates must pass health and background checks and be able to work with students with disabilities.

Qualifications

  • Must be 21+ with valid Ohio driver's license.
  • Minimum of two years driving experience.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Background checks (FBI & state) with clean record.
  • Pass a T-8 physical.
  • Satisfactory pre-employment and random drug tests.
  • M-F 5:45-9:45 AM and 1:30-5:00 PM.
  • Insurable with no recent DUI/DWI/OMVI/OVI and ≤4 points.
  • Ability to work with students with disabilities.
  • EDU Workforce Permit for assignment.
  • Self-directed and trainable.
  • Ability to assist students physically.
  • Behavioral management training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Transport students safely to and from school and related activities.
  • Assist students in and out of the van and secure seating.
  • Inspect and manage car seats in the van.
  • Ensure supervision before departures.
  • Maintain van and document pre-trip inspections.
  • Report repairs to mechanics.
  • Keep the van clean and safe.
  • Follow safety rules and district policies.
  • Represent the district positively.

Job description

Van Driver (Part-time)
  • Twenty-one years of age (21) with a valid Ohio driver's license
  • Minimum of two years driving experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of semi-annual driver record checks through the Ohio Department of Education And Workforce showing less than 6 points and no more than two (2) serious traffic violations during the past two years
  • Clear FBI & State criminal record check
  • Be in good physical health and pass a T-8 physical. (Provided by the District)
  • Satisfactory pre-employment and ongoing random drug tests
  • Available to work between the hours of 5:45-9:45 AM and 1:30-5:00 PM M-F
  • Insurable as defined by the insurance carrier of the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio Board of Education and no prior DUI, DWI, OMVI, or OVI within the past ten (10) years and no more than 4 (current) points on your license.
  • Demonstrates maturity and ability to work with students with physical and mental disabilities and their families
  • Valid Department of Education and Workforce Permit appropriate for the assignment.
  • Self-directed and able to learn required skills for the position
  • Ability to physically manage students with disabilities
  • Training and/or experience in behavioral management techniques is preferred

Specific Responsibilities

The following responsibilities are representative, but not limited to those performed by a Van Driver.

  • Transport students safely to and from school and school-related activities/events.
  • Assist students in and out of the van which may include securing students properly including lifting students in and out of car seats
  • Properly inspect, install, and remove any type of car seats into the van
  • Verify students are under the supervision of appropriate school staff before departing school and appropriate parent/guardian when departing at their home stop
  • Properly maintain electronic devices daily
  • Perform and document a pre-trip inspection of the school van daily.
  • Advise mechanics regarding necessary van repairs.
  • Maintain adequate cleanliness of the van.
  • Adhere to all applicable safety rules and regulations.
  • Adhere to district Board policies and guidelines, including the Transportation Employee Handbook.
  • Promotes a favorable image of the service center
Conduct

Each staff member shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance and abuse of any prescribed substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment with the ESC.

Terms Of Employment

Each staff member shall serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings. Each staff member has a legal responsibility to help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.

If applicable, it is the employee's responsibility to maintain proper certification/licensure and to initiate the renewal process in sufficient time to receive the updated certificate/license prior to the expiration of the present certificate/license.
